Introductory concepts in philosophy related to pop culture (film, television shows, music, etc). H59: “Who Run the World?”: Feminist Analysis of Pop Music Full!
Difficulty: **
Teachers: Elizabeth Mashkow

Feminism is a hot topic in pop culture today. Last year, Billboard magazine declared feminism to be “a job requirement” for pop stars. Many pop stars, including Beyoncé, Harry Styles, and Taylor Swift, are self-proclaimed feminists, while stars such as Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, and even Lady Gaga have faced criticism for calling the term into question. But what does it mean to be “feminist” anyway? And what is today’s pop music actually saying about women? In this course, we will discuss and define the idea of feminism and some of the key concepts related to feminist theory. Then, we will analyze some of your favorite pop songs to decide how feminist they really are.

H60: To Infiniti and Beyond: Sci-Fi and our Society
Difficulty: *
Teachers: Kendra Cornelis

How has sci-fi changed in the last 60 years? When Star Trek was first released the future (as it showed it) was full of promise and opportunity -- but as time has progressed, Sci-Fi has gotten darker and the predictions more sinister. Why do we think that is? In this class we will explore popular Sci-Fi tropes, talk about our favorite movies and television shows (i.e. Black Mirror, Orphan Black, Star Wars, The Martian and More), and analyze how they reflect society's relationship with the past, present and future.

Enjoying good and bad T.V.

M47: Methods of Solving Monster Integrals
Difficulty: ***
Teachers: Matthew Kulec

Course is based on Paul J. Nahin's book "Inside Interesting Integrals."

Most integral challenge problems are indefinite forms, but here we will introduce some unforgettable definite integrals with beautiful solutions. To get a taste of what this course has to offer, we will prove:

$$\int_1^\infty \frac{\{x\}-\frac{1}{2}}{x}dx = -1 + ln(\sqrt{2\pi})$$
where $$\{x\}$$ denotes the fractional part of $$x$$ (for example $$\{5.679\} = 0.679$$ and $$\{7\} = 0$$).

And because I can't put it any better, the author states: "a collection of sneaky tricks, sly substitutions, and numerous other stupendously clever, awesomely wicked, and devilishly seductive maneuvers."

The course will follow a lecture format, so please bring any writing utensils and several sheets of paper, preferably a notebook. Although the course is somewhat difficult, I will explain thoroughly and answer questions that you may have. No nonintuitive jumps! You do not have to buy the book!

We will not cover everything this book has to offer, only a good chunk. Random applications in physics and engineering will be discussed, so this isn't just limited to math as the course category indicates. Anyone with a penchant for solving challenging integrals and is eager to learn how to solve MORE is certainly invited.

Prerequisites
Must have taken Calculus AB and BC and done well/understood the material. Best if audience shows interest and is flexible with challenge problems.

M68: What are the odds?
